Introduction to Temperaments
Part 1
I luurv psychology.
I love learning about people, personalities and how the brain works. Yes you
may call my JustyourteenageNERD if you want.
Anywho, I
have loved this subject for only a gazillion years.
“Temperament is a configuration of observable personality traits, such as habits of communication, patterns of action, and sets of characteristic attitudes, values, and talents. It also encompasses personal needs, the kinds of contributions that individuals make in the workplace, and the roles they play in society. Dr. David Keirsey has identified mankind's four basic temperaments as the Artisan, the Guardian, the Rational, and the Idealist.
Each temperament has its own unique qualities and shortcomings, strengths and challenges. What accounts for these differences? To use the idea of Temperament most effectively, it is important to understand that the four temperaments are not simply arbitrary collections of characteristics, but spring from an interaction of the two basic dimensions of human behavior: our communication and our action, our words and our deeds, or, simply, what we say and what we do.”- http://www.keirsey.com/4temps/overview_temperaments.asp
If you are too lazy to read the official explanation of Temperaments (cough cough…me) I’ll explain. Okay so basically there are four different types of temperament:
©
Phlegmatic. (Relaxed and quiet).
©
Sanguine (pleasure-seeking and sociable)
©
Melancholic (intelligent and
thoughtful)
©
Choleric (ambitious and power seeking)
If you are a Harry Potter fan or are familiar with it (Honestly…who isn’t?) Then these may sound similar to you.
…Get my drift yet...
No clue?
Well J.K.Rowling actually based the houses off the Temperaments.
©
Phlegmatic being Hufflepuff.
©
Sanguine being Gryffindor
©
Melancholic being Ravenclaw
©
Choleric being Slytherin
Don’t tell me that isn’t cool! Well anywho. The science behind these types. Okay so basically there was this dude who was a Greek whose name was Hippocrates. He believed that certain moods, emotions and behaviors were caused by body fluids call humors. Yep. Yuck right? Well the four fluids were

© Yellow Bile - Yellow
© Black Bile - Blue
© Phlegm - Green
If you’ve been doing your homework or are just a HP fan you see where I am
going with the colours.
So yeah, put them together and voila

Phlegmatic : Hufflepuff – Yellow Bile (Yellow)
©
Sanguine : Gryffindor - blood (Red)
©
Melancholic : Ravenclaw – Black bile (Blue)

Choleric : Slytherin – Phlegm (Green)
Back to Science lesson 101. Kay, so now we have established that these types of humors influence human personalities. Next there was this other guy, Galen (AD 131–200). From his theories of mixing the different types of temperaments came these four types of humors, which he named "sanguine", "choleric", "melancholic" and "phlegmatic" You haven’t that before right ;)
The modern names to this subject are: Artisan (SP), Guardian (SJ), Idealist (NF), and Rational (NT). Rather than using extroversion and introversion (E/I) and task/people focus, like other theories, KTS mapped the temperaments to "Sensing" and "Intuition" (S/N, renamed "concrete" and "abstract") – Thanks Wikipedia
Okay now that I have finished blabbing for an hour. This is the cool part. YEEAH IT GETS COOLER ;)
There are four types as we have established and within each type there is another four types. Don’t worry this is it now ;) Sort of…
Looks like a periodic table right, although less scary and less numbers and whatnot. Okay, maybe it doesn’t look like it but as you can see there is lots of different letters such as
ISTJ or ENTP.
These letters do mean something! Okay so the first category is

Okay so first you need to take the test to find out what you are!

The test! It may take long but it’ll be worth because
a)
If you are HP fan this is what house you’d truly be in!
b)
It’ll tell you things you didn’t think about yourself!
c)
It’s so accurate it’s scary!
You’ll see if you’re a:

Very interesting, thank you! But I have a question for you.
Are you sure that Idealists fit in Slytherin? I am an INFP and would rather get expelled instead of coping with all those power-hungry, bully guys! I think Hufflepuff would work so much better ;) Anyway, Keirsey website says:
Guardians = Hufflepuff
Rationals = Rawenclaw
Artisans = Slytherin
Idealista = Gryffindor (but I don't agree with this point. I'm an Idealist but not courageous at all. Not in the "external" world, anyway.)
What do you think about it? :)
P.S. If I made some language mistakes, that's simply because English is not my first language. I hope that meaning is clear as well!
Hey! I am glad you found my post interesting, thank you! Your English is very good by the way. When I was poking my nose around all the different sites that research these temperaments I sort of came to a conclusion that, guardians which are generally symbolized with a yellow colour were kind, selfless, protecting, family orientated in nature just like the Hufflepuffs. Looking back now I would say that Artisans are Gryffindor, meaning they are daring, confident and bold. Rationals are most likely Slytherin as they are inventive, mind driven and determined. Idealists like you and I would most likely be Ravenclaw as I like to be creative, imaginative, unique and ambitious. Feel free to discuss more! I love hearing from readers x
